In 1994, the Smith family lost their mother to cancer. To help the family and strengthen their bond to one another, two brothers and their father started a small concrete forming company called Whitewater Developments Ltd. Kyle was trained in plumbing and mechanical work, Craig was trained as a carpenter, and Brian was a partner in a small accounting practice on the North Shore. Together they built what is known today as Whitewater Concrete.
